Our investigation is about how the colour of lights affect the amount the of oxygen produced by the plants. Our investigation revolved around 4 different light colours : Red , Blue , Green and white .
We have decided to use Cabomba plant , a common household plant . Cabomba is an aquatic plant, one of two belonging to the family Cabombaceae.
Cabomba plants like warm-temperate, humid climate and temperatures of 15-18 degree celsius . Cabomba plant can withstand temperatures going to less than 0 degree celsius . Its preferred temperature range is 13 degree celsius to 27 degree celsius (Queensland Department of fisheries )
We did 3 rounds of experiment ( 1 test experiment to see whether the experiment was feasible ) . The duration of the experiment is 24 hours .
Our hypothesis of the experiment was that red light would allow the plant to grow and produce more oxygen ( GMC Garden notes ) under red light as compared to other coloured lights as the red light has a longer wavelength compared to other coloured lights. (University of Deleware , pg 1) .
With our research , we advise fish tank owners to place their aquariums under white lights as this allows the water plant to photosynthesis and produced more oxygen. This will allow the fish tank owners to be less reliant on their oxygen pumps.
Our research is also able to benefit the environment by allowing plants to photosynthesis more. This will benefit us as the plants will produce more oxygen . People who grow plants will also benefit from our results. This is because indoor farming requires the environment to self -sustainable . With our results , we hope to advise indoor farmers to use white light to create a more sustainable environment for their plants . (West Bridge Farms , pg 1)
